The Virginia & Truckee Railroad gets into the Halloween spirit by offering a number of fun and spooky special train rides during the Halloween season. Other railroads in the area have Halloween trains as well.

Pumpkin Patch Trains on the Virginia & Truckee Railroad

Saturday and Sunday, October 12 - 13, 2019 - Ride the Pumpkin Patch Trains on the V & T Railroad from Virginia City to Gold Hill and back. Passengers can pick their own pumpkin, which is included in the cost of the ride. Trains depart each day at 11:20 a.m., 1:20 p.m., and 3 p.m. Tickets are $19 for adults, $10 for children 5 to 12, free for kids 4 and under. For more information, call (775) 847-0380. You can get tickets online to reserve your seats on this popular ride.

Harvest Train at the Nevada State Railroad Museum in Carson City

Saturday and Sunday, October 19 - 20, 2019. Ride the steam train at the Nevada State Railroad Museum and enjoy the pumpkin patch, craft vendors, scarecrow art show and auction, food trucks and food drive. Admission includes unlimited steam train rides and museum entry. Adults 18 and over are $15 (museum members $10), kids 4 to 17 are $5, age 3 and under free. Regular museum admission will also be available. Train rides depart about every 40 minutes from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Haunted Ghost Train of Old Ely

Saturdays, October 18, 19, 25, 26, 2019. All start at 7 p.m. - The Nevada Northern Railway's Haunted Ghost Train of Old Ely takes passengers on scary trips with ghost stories, zombies, ghosts, ghouls, aliens, and maybe even UFOs. While riding this Halloween train, you'll never know what's around the next bend. Costumes encouraged. Tickets are $41 for adults, $20 for children 4 through 12. Kids under 4 ride free but they still need a ticket. You can order tickets online or call (775) 289-2085.

Pumpkin Patch Express at the Western Pacific Railroad Museum in Portola

Saturday and Sunday, October 19 - 20 and 26 - 27, 2019. The trains will take visitors to a Pumpkin Patch where they can buy their pumpkins. Trains depart hourly from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. each day. On Saturday nights, Super Spooky Night Trains depart between 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. The museum will also be open on Pumpkin Patch Express days. There will be a Haunted Railcar and an all-ages Haunted Car, entertainment, costume contest, special exhibits, food and craft vendors and more. Admission is $10 per car or $5 with 3 cans of food for the EPCAN food bank. For more information, call (530) 832-4131.

Spookomotive Trains at the California State Railroad Museum in Sacramento

Saturdays and Sundays, October 5 - 6, 12 - 13, 19 - 20, 26 - 27, 2019. This Halloween train is not scary and a fun activity for the family. Ride the train along the levees of the Sacramento River. The train is decorated for the season with cornstalks, scarecrows, skeletons, bats and spiders. Departures are every hour on the hour from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Each weekend features a different theme. Coach tickets are $15 for adults, $8 for kids ages 2 to 17. Children under 2 ride free on an adult's lap. Upgrades available to the First Class Mad Scientist Laboratory. Discounts for museum members.
