Big events during May, 2024 include... May is Older Americans Month - May, 2024. Older adults are a vital part of our society. Since 1963, communities across the country have shown their gratitude by celebrating Older Americans Month each May. The theme of the 2023 celebration is "Aging Unbound." Pipes on the River: Howard Bennett - Friday, May 3, 2024, 12 p.m. to 12:45 p.m. Howard will perform favorite Handel and Bach pieces and transcriptions, including Handel's Largo, demonstrating the glory of Trinity's Casavant Organ.Pipes on the River is free and open to the public. At Trinity Episcopal Cathedral, 200 Island Avenue, Reno. Cinco de Mayo Celebration - Saturday and Sunday, May 4 - 5, 2024, 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Come to the Glow Plaza Festival Grounds in Reno's Neon Line District to enjoy Northern Nevada's largest annual celebration of Hispanic heritage. Join us for an unforgettable celebration packed with vibrant music, mouthwatering food, and non-stop fun for the whole family. Admission is $10. The Glow Plaza is at 670 W. 4th St. in Reno. "Expedition Dinosaur: Rise of the Mammals" at the Wilbur D. May Museum - through May 5, 2024. An interactive exhibit at the Wilbur D. May Museum at Rancho San Rafael Regional Park in Reno. Featuring fan favorite stations and brand new animatronics and experiences, this exhibit is not to be missed and makes for the perfect field trip or way to spend a winter day. The entry fee is $13 for adults, $11 for children 3 to 17 and seniors. Kids under 3 are free. Hours at the Wilbur D. May Museum are Wednesday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sunday from 12 noon to 4 p.m. The museum is closed on Monday and Tuesday. Bike Month - May, 2024. This month long bicycle awareness campaign is put on by the Truckee Meadows Bicycle Alliance and focuses on promoting healthy living and physical fitness through active transportation. Key things this year include commuter challenge, educational and informational presentations, promoting partner events and rides and elevating community organizations and businesses. Truckee River Month is a month-long celebration every May dedicated to raising public awareness and engagement with our wonderful Truckee River. Check the website for a list of 2023 events. Sci-On! Science + Fiction Film Festival - May 1 - 4, 2024. Science and science-fiction activities and film screenings will be at the Fleischmann Planetarium on the UNR campus. Tickets are available online. Galena Creek Visitor Center - Summer hours starting May 1, 2024, are Wednesday through Sunday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The surrounding Galena Creek Regional Park is open from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Discover Your Parks Series - Saturday, May 4, 2024. Truckee Meadows Parks Foundation is leading Discover Your Parks Series in different parks located in Washoe County. This is a free program of all-ages events. Visit the web page for a full list. Attendance is limited and you must register to participate. If you would rather, you can virtually visit several popular parks and trails with guided hike presentations available from "Virtual Guided Hikes" on the TMPF website. Reno Aces Baseball - Tuesday, May 7, 2024, 11:05 a.m. The Reno Aces start May with a six game homestand against the Tacoma Rainiers at Greater Nevada Field. Another six game series against the Salt Lake Bees runs from May 28 to June 2. Science Distilled: The Story of Extremes - Thursday, May 9, 2024, 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Join us for a thought-provoking conversation delving into the realm of extremes. We'll explore the impacts and dynamics of extreme heat, flash flooding, atmospheric rivers, and even delve into the complexities of extreme human behavior. 21+ event presented by The Discovery Museum. Headlock on Hunger - Saturday, May 11, 2024, 7 p.m. Family-friendly event features wrestling, raffles, face painting. The superstars of All Pro Wrestling Nevada and the Food Bank of Northern Nevada are teaming up to put a headlock on child hunger in the Truckee Meadows. All proceeds go to the Food Bank. Tickets are $5 for general admission and $20 for VIP. At Reed High School, 1350 Baring Boulevard in Sparks. Tickets available online. May Arboretum Society Spring Plant Sale - Friday through Sunday, May 10 - 12, 2024. Friday is the member's only preview from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Saturday and Sunday are 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. and 8 a.m. to 12 noon respectively Come stroll Burke and Plaza gardens where there will be over 4,500 plants for sale. All plants will be zoned for our area and most you will not find in local garden shops. You will find a variety of shrubs, flowers, cactus, tomatoes and more. At the Wilbur D. May Arboretum in Rancho San Rafael Regional Park, 1595 N. Sierra St. in Reno. Hands ON! Second Saturday at the Nevada Museum of Art - Saturday, May 11, 2024. Come to the Nevada Museum of Art for fun for the whole family, including storytelling, art activities, live performances, and all current exhibits. This month, come to celebrate the art of Jean LaMarr. Admission to the Museum is free for all on Second Saturdays. Mother's Day - Sunday, May 12, 2024. Programs on the Porch at Bowers Mansion - Fridays from May 17 to June 21, 2024, 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. This year's theme is 'Variety Edition.' Bring a blanket or chair and enjoy this free series in front of historic Bowers Mansion. This series is free, however donations are happily accepted for the speakers. The first presentation is "Carson Street Ragtime Band" featuring music from the 20s, 30s and more. Bowers Mansion Regional Park, 4005 Bowers Mansion Rd. in Washoe Valley. The Riverwalk Merchants present this fun event every third Saturday of the month. Tickets are $30 and available online or at one of the start locations on the day of the event. This is a 21+ event. Brought to you by Truckee Meadows Parks Foundation. 42nd Annual Chili on the Comstock in Virginia City - Saturday and Sunday, May 18 - 19, 2024. This event has participants sampling chili and craft brews from various merchants and booths spread out in zones around Virginia City, giving visitors the chance to discover more of the historic mining town than ever before. Returning this year; The Great Fire Hot Chili Pepper Eating Challenge. Ticket options give attendees the option of sampling from 12 chili booths including professional and local chefs, 12 craft beer samples, or for a better value and even more fun, a combination of the two. Pet Vaccine Clinic at Bartley Ranch Regional Park - Sunday, May 19, 2024, 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. Animal Services will be providing free pet microchipping, free vaccinations for Canine Distemper/Parvo, and free vaccinations for Feline FVRCP thanks to a vaccine donation from Petco Love's Vaccinated and Loved program. Rabies vaccinations and dog licenses will also be available as low-cost add-on services. At Flying B Pavilion, Bartley Ranch Regional Park, 6000 Bartley Ranch Rd. in Reno. "Rock This Country" at the Pioneer Center - May 23, 2024, 7 p.m. The Reno Dance Company and students of 'The School at RDC' collaborate to present a fast paced, original musical revue filled with explosive energy, and dazzling costumes and scenery. The Idlewild Park train begins 2024 operations on the Friday before Memorial Day and continues running on Wednesdays through Sundays until Labor Day. Open Wednesday to Friday 11 a.m. - 3 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday 11 a.m. - 4 p.m. This makes a fun family adventure and the fare is still just $2, with kids 2 and under free on an adult's lap. 2024 Primary Election Early Voting - May 25 - June 7, 2024. Learn about the candidates and voting in the 2024 Primary Election. It's actually pretty easy, but there are certain steps and rules you must follow to make sure your vote is counted. Primary Election day is Tuesday, June 11, 2024. Memorial Day Weekend - Memorial Day is observed on Monday, May 27, 2024, with numerous activities and events around Reno during this first big holiday weekend of the year. Nevada Field Day & Ag Expo - Friday, May 31, 2024, 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. Free and open to the public. The event will be buzzing with activities at more than 40 booths focusing on the latest advancements in agriculture, horticulture, nutrition, natural resources and the environment. The Valley Road Field Lab also hosts a variety of other research projects, and guided tours will be provided. University of Nevada, Reno, Experiment Station, Valley Road Field Lab and Greenhouse Complex. The main entrance is at the intersection of Sadleir Way and Southworth Drive. No Pets Allowed! Reno-Tahoe Odyssey - Friday and Saturday, May 31 - June 1, 2024. Besides the main relay run that goes up to Lake Tahoe, there are two other runs involved - the Capital Odyssey and the Comstock Odyssey. How all this works is a bit complicated, so visit the website for all the details on how to participate. National Trails Day - Friday to Sunday, May 31 to June 2, 2024. National Trails Day recognizes the incredible benefits of federal, state and local trails. Events held throughout the United States encourage people to discover their local trails and share their excitement for the outdoors. Locally, Friends of Black Rock High Rock are sponsoring a weekend helping improve our public lands at Steven's Camp, a remote location in the Black Rock National Conservation Area.
