September is National Preparedness Month. Make sure you and your family are ready for any of the natural disasters that can occur in the Reno region, including wildfire, earthquakes, and flooding. Best in the West Nugget Rib Cook-Off - Wednesday through Sunday, August 31 - September 5, 2022. The Nugget Rib Cook-Off is really a cooking competition between the professional barbeque teams that will also be serving ribs and fixins to the public during the event. Admission to the Nugget Rib Cook-Off and parking are free. Held at Victorian Square in Sparks.

35th Annual Numaga Indian Days Pow Wow - Thursday through Sunday, September 1 - 4, 2022. This free, family-friendly annual event is held over Labor Day weekend and features some of the best Native American dancers, singers and drummers in the country. Besides the memorable pow wow entertainment, over 25 vendors sell traditional native foods and handcrafted silver work, bead work, baskets and other American Indian art. The event is at Hungry Valley, 266 Loop Road in Sparks. Hungry Valley is 19 miles north of downtown Reno in scenic Eagle Canyon.

Labor Day Weekend - Friday through Monday, September 2 - 5, 2022. This weekend is the last big holiday weekend of the summer. There are plenty of things to do for your last summer fling, including train rides, hiking, picnicking, swimming and water play, visiting museums, the Nugget Rib Cook-Off, and more.

Wolf Pack Football - Saturday, September 3, 2022. The Pack takes on the Texas State University Bobcats at Mackay Stadium in Reno. Next is another home game a Mackay Stadium vs. University of the Incarnate Word Cardinals on September 10. A road game follows against the University of Iowa Buckeyes on September 17.

Burning Man 2022 - Burning Man in the Black Rock Desert is from August 28 through September 5, 2022. The 2022 art theme is "Waking Dreams."

Senior Fest 2022 - Tuesday, September 6, 2022. Held at the Reno Town Mall, Senior Fest provides seniors with the opportunity to connect with senior service providers and businesses. Businesses and agencies will be on hand offering a wide range of resources for seniors, boomers, and retirees. The event is from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. It is free and open to the public. The Reno Town Mall is at the corner of S. Virginia Street and Peckham Lane, across from the Atlantis Hotel Casino.

Discover Science Lecture Series - Thursday, September 8, 2022, 7 p.m. A lecture by Andrew Revkin. Thirty-four years into reporting on global warming science and policy, from the North Pole to the Amazon, the White House to the Vatican, a leading environmental journalist lays out his biggest mistakes and most surprising insights. These free lectures are held in the Redfield Auditorium in the Davidson Mathematics and Science Center on the UNR campus.

Barrels & Bites - Friday, September 9, 2022. This fundraising event for the Boys & Girls Club of Truckee Meadows features ton's of themed alcohol and spirit booths and themed rooms, as well as delicious food provided by Reno's hottest local eateries. 21+ at the Peppermill Reno. Get tickets online. Only 2000 wil be sold.

40th Great Reno Balloon Race - Friday through Sunday, September 9 - 11, 2022. You have to get up real early, but it's worth it to enjoy the colorful spectacle of the world's largest free hot air balloon event. It is held annually at Rancho San Rafael Regional Park in Reno.

63rd Annual International Camel & Ostrich Races - Friday through Sunday, September 9 - 11, 2022. Bring the family to Virginia City to enjoy this hilarious event, a tradition that dates back to the 50s. Friday is Hot Camel Nights starting at 5 p.m. On Saturday and Sunday, gates open at 10 a.m. and races start at 12 noon each day, plus there are lots of other activities around town during the weekend. No umbrellas or pets allowed.

Reno Greek Festival - Friday and Saturday, September 9 - 10, 2022. Come and enjoy Greek food, live music, dancing, tours of Saint Anthony Greek Church and just a great time together as a community. 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. on Friday, 12 noon to 10 p.m. on Saturday. General admission is $5. Advance tickets for $12 get you $10 worth of food credit. At St. Anthony Greek Orthodox Church, 4795 Lakeside Dr. in Reno.

Picnic in the Park Music Series - Fridays, September 2, 9, 16, 23, 30, 2022, 5:30 p.m. Get a great start to your weekend by enjoying the relaxing and serene setting of Kleiner's Oak Grove while listening to a series of artists every Friday in September. If you don't feel like bringing a picnic we will also have Dayana Mix and High Steaks Grill food trucks on site. At the May Arboretum in Rancho San Rafael Regional Park.

Social Science: True Crime - Saturday, September 10, 2022, 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. Discover your inner sleuth when you explore the science that solves crimes. Apply your own wound, create blood spatter artwork, see what it's like to be buried alive, gather evidence from crime scenes, test your crime committing knowledge in a trivia challenge, and much more. This is a 21+ event at The Discovery Museum, 490 S. Center Street in Reno. This is a popular event with limited capacity - it is recommended to buy tickets online in advance.

Wolf Pack Football - Saturday, September 10, 2022, 2:30 p.m. The Pack takes on the Cardinals of the University of the Incarnate Word. This is a home game at Mackay Stadium in Reno.

Hands ON! Second Saturdays - Saturday, September 10, 2022, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Come to the Nevada Museum of Art for a day of fun family activities and free admission for all. The theme is different each Second Saturday and is sometimes related to one of the current exhibits. Enjoy free admission and activities at the Museum. Participate in hands-on art projects and storytelling.

Tour de Tahoe - Bike Big Blue - Sunday, September 11, 2022. Experience the adventure of riding your bicycle around Lake Tahoe's 72-mile shoreline by participating in the 18th Annual Tour de Tahoe – Bike Big Blue. Cyclists enjoy great food and participant support stations. You can register online for this event.

National Championship Air Races and Air Show - Wednesday through Sunday, September 14 - 18, 2022. The world's fastest motor sport also features extensive static displays along with spectacular military and civilian aerial entertainment. This year, the headline performers are the F-18 Tactical Demonstration Team and the F-22 Raptor Demonstration. This is the only pylon air racing event of its kind in the world.

Sierra Nevada Yarn Crawl - Thursday through Sunday, September 15 - 18, 2022. It's a free event designed to celebrate friends, community and all things fiber. We welcome you into our shops, homes, ranches, warehouses, and more. Visit the website for more details.

Reno Comic Crawl - Saturday, September 17, 2022, 8 p.m. to 2 a.m. The Reno Comic-Crawl (formerly Superhero Crawl) is the longest running barcrawl of its theme. Participants enjoy over 100 different drink specials at 17 bars, restaurants and clubs throughout downtown Reno along with specials on food, costume contests, giveaways and free cover in nightclubs and resorts. The start location is Siri's Casino in downtown Reno. Order crawl cups online.

Smithsonian Museum Day - Saturday, September 17, 2022. Museum Day is an annual celebration of boundless curiosity hosted by Smithsonian magazine. Participating museums and cultural institutions across the country provide free entry for up to two people presenting a Museum Day ticket and the Fleischmann Planetarium and Science Center is a participating institution. Tickets are available online.

Reno Wine Walk - Saturday, September 17, 2022, 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. The Riverwalk Merchants present this fun event every third Saturday of the month. Visit any of the participating merchants with $30 and receive your wine glass and hand stamp (with photo ID), then make the rounds sampling wines at numerous businesses in the area. Fall into the Holidays Craft Fair - Saturday, September 17, 2022, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Vendors will feature photography, glass art, mosaics, metal art, woodwork, kitchen items, yard flags, clothing, jewelry, books and much more. Entry into the event is free. Proceeds will benefit the City of Sparks Arts Fund and Sparks Parks and Recreation Leisure Without Limits programs for people with disabilities. Water Lantern Festival - Saturday, September 17, 2022, 4:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Water Lantern Festival is filled with fun, happiness, hope, and great memories that you'll cherish for a lifetime. Guided Hikes at Galena Creek Visitor Center - Saturday, September 17, 2022, 10 a.m. Our guided hikes are a great way to stay active while learning about the local area. Bring water, sunscreen, hiking boots, and a hungry brain. Email at visitorcenter@gbininstitute.org to reserve a spot. At Galena Creek Visitor Center, 18250 Mt. Rose Highway (Nevada 431) in south Reno.

Nevada Field Day 2022 - Saturday, September 17, 2022, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Free and open to the public. At Nevada Field Day, visitors will be treated to a variety of hands-on activities, winetasting, demonstrations and giveaways, including a Farm-to-Fork Cooking Demonstration and samples at noon on the Main Stage from the University of Nevada, Reno's own Elisabeth Watkins. Other demonstrations on the Main Stage at Nevada Field Day will involve protecting your home from wildfire embers, container gardening, and propagating indigenous food and medicinal plants. Enjoy more than 40 booths focusing on the latest advancements in agriculture, horticulture, nutrition, natural resources and the environment. The event is at the University of Nevada, Reno Experiment Station, Main Station Field Lab at McCarran Blvd. and Clean Water Way.

Swan Lake at The Pioneer Center - Saturday and Sunday, September 17 - 18, 2022. A.V.A. Ballet Theatre presents the classic Swan Lake with a large cast of professional and local dancers. The Reno Philharmonic Orchestra will perform the haunting score to this wonderful ballet. The Saturday performance is at 8 p.m., Sunday at 2 p.m.

Fiesta on Wells - Sunday, September 18, 2022, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Come say hi and celebrate Hispanic Heritage month with music, folkloric dancers, delicious food and more. We close several blocks on South Wells Avenue, from Burns St. to Vassar St. for this big street party.

Banned Books Week - Sunday through Saturday, September 18 - 24, 2022. Banned Books Week brings together the entire book community in shared support of the freedom to seek and to express ideas. Banned Books Week draws national attention to the harms of censorship and the benefits of unrestricted reading. Celebrated by the Washoe County Library System.

Street Vibrations Fall Rally - Thursday through Sunday, September 22 - 25, 2022. Over 50,000 riders converge for the Fall Rally and there are even more events and things to do, including Tattoo Expo, hundreds of vendors, factory rigs selling everything motorcycle, stunt shows, rides to Lake Tahoe, and biker drinking places. A portion of the proceeds benefits the Juvenile Diabetes Association.

Arts for All Nevada hosts A Night at the Mansion - Friday, September 23, 2022, 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. A Night at the Mansion, an evening of creativity, cocktails, and fun, will take place at the historic Lake Mansion, 250 Court Street in Reno. Guests can enjoy passed appetizers prepared and served by students in the Washoe County School District's Culinary Arts Program at the Academy of Arts, Careers and Technologies, and live music by musicians from UNR. A silent auction will feature autumnal-themed artwork and home décor from some of our community’s most talented local artists and craftspeople. Tickets are $55 per person and can be purchased online. You must be 21 and over to attend.

Monster Jam 2022 - Friday through Sunday, September 23 - 25, 2022. The most action-packed motorsports experience for families in the world today returns to Reno for another adrenaline-charged weekend at the Reno-Sparks Livestock Events Center. The Reno event features eight skilled athletes fighting for the championship while putting on a spectacle, constantly innovating and always entertaining. Tickets available online.

Truckee River Cleanup Day - Saturday, September 24, 2022. Cleanup and beautification projects span from Verdi to Lockwood. Projects include storm-drain stenciling, litter pickup, graffiti removal, in-the-river trash removal, weed pulling and park beautification projects. National Public Lands Day - Saturday, September 24, 2022. Enjoy an entrance fee free day at hundreds of units of our National Parks system and other public lands administered by agencies like the U.S. Forest Service and Bureau of Land Management. You can also volunteer and help with public lands projects across the country. Locally, Friends of Nevada Wilderness and Friends of Black Rock-High Rock will be hosting service projects.

The Elements of Music free family concert from the Reno Phil - Saturday, September 24, 2022, 2 p.m. Join the Reno Phil for a free family concert. Kid friendly activities begin at 1 p.m. and the 1-hour performance begins at 2 p.m. This family concert is a great way to introduce the entire family to the symphony. Meet the Reno Phil Orchestra & Maestro Laura Jackson as they explore the elements of music. At the Pioneer Center for the Performing Arts, 100 S. Virginia St. in Reno.

Genoa Candy Dance Arts & Crafts Faire - Saturday and Sunday, September 24 - 25, 2022. This event carries on a tradition started in 1919. There will be over 300 exhibitors, music and entertainment, and 3,000 pounds of homemade candy. 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day. Tickets required for the Candy Dance and Dinner. (775) 782-8696.

"Survival of the Slowest" exhibition at The Discovery - September 24, 2022 through January 8, 2023. The new featured exhibition explores the often-overlooked species that have used their disadvantages to help them survive - and even thrive - in a world where large, strong, and fast animals are often at the top of the food chain. This exhibition allows visitors to get up close and personal with more than 15 live animals including a two-toed sloth, red-footed tortoise, green iguana, four-toed hedgehog, bearded dragon, ball python, and more. Entrance to the exhibition is included with admission. The Discovery Museum is at 490 S. Center Street in Reno.

Dozers & Dirt - Saturday, September 24, 2022, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Join us and get dirty digging-in your shovels to support local children battling cancer. We invite big and little kids alike to operate more than 35 pieces of heavy construction equipment, experience up-close displays of the RAVEN helicopter, a bomb unit, police cars, fire trucks, and more. Lunch and a day of fun is included. All proceeds benefit the Northern Nevada Children's Cancer Foundation. Tickets available online. Event is at the Rilite Aggregate Pit, 9208 Western Skies Drive in south Reno. Closed-toe shoes required.

Nevada Kids Foundation 1st annual Charity Cornhole Tournament - Saturday, September 24, 2022. The tournament will take place at the Silver State Athletic Center in Reno and will be run by Northern Nevada Cornhole. This a fundraiser to support the educational goals for Title 1 schools in northern Nevada. There will also be food trucks, drinks and raffle prizes. At 4675 Aircenter Circle in Reno. Electric Vehicle Ride & Drive - Saturday, September 24, 2022, 10 a.m. This event at Mira Loma Park will allow you to take an EV out for a spin, and learn about charging. Discover the current and near-future plans for public charging across Nevada and learn about the tools that can help you on your EV journey. The first 50 test drivers will receive a free lunch. Pre-registration is not required, but recommended.

Polar Express - November 17 through December 23, 2022. Riding The Polar Express™ to the North Pole has become a popular family outing during the Christmas holiday season in the Reno / Tahoe area. Transportation to visit Santa's legendary workshop is provided on trains of the Virginia and Truckee Railroad from the Eastgate Station near Carson City. Tickets are sure to sell out, so it is important to get them soon. You must purchase in advance - tickets are not sold at the station.
