Big events during May, 2022 include...

Cinco de Mayo Celebration - Saturday and Sunday, April 30 - May 1, 2022, 12 noon to 8 p.m. Come to the Grand Sierra Resort to enjoy Northern Nevada's largest annual celebration of Hispanic heritage. From amateur boxing to dancing horses and carnival rides, there is fun for the whole family. Admission is $20 for adults, $8 for kids under 12 and seniors 65 and over. The Grand Sierra is at 2500 E. 2nd St. in Reno.

May is Nevada Wildfire Awareness Campaign - Every action you take at your home or in your community to reduce the wildfire threat and prepare for the next wildfire can help increase the odds of survival. Check the website for related events and other information about wildfire prevention.

Agriculture Day at Rancho San Rafael Regional Park - Sunday, May 1, 2022, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Come to the Nevada Farms and Families area next to the Museum at Rancho San Rafael for some amazing family fun. Activities will include story times, composting demonstration, farm animals, beekeeping exhibit, antique tractors and engines, and much more. Free and open to the public. Rancho San Rafael Regional Park is at 1595 N. Sierra Street in Reno.

May is Older Americans Month - May, 2022. Older adults are a vital part of our society. Since 1963, communities across the country have shown their gratitude by celebrating Older Americans Month each May. The theme of the 2022 celebration is "Age My Way."

Bike Month - May, 2022. This month long bicycle awareness campaign is put on by the Truckee Meadows Bicycle Alliance and focuses on promoting healthy living and physical fitness through active transportation. Key things this year include commuter challenge, educational and informational presentations, promoting partner events and rides and elevating community organizations and businesses. One Truckee River Month - entire month of May, 2022. This year's event has no formal activities, but it is still Truckee River Month and you are invited to get out and enjoy the waterway on your own. A more formal event is scheduled to return in 2023.

Galena Creek Visitor Center - May 1, 2022 is the opening date for summer hours, which are Tuesday through Sunday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The surrounding Galena Creek Regional Park is open from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. From Memorial Day weekend to Labor Day, hours are 8 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Reno Aces Baseball - May 3, 2022, 11:05 a.m. The Reno Aces start May with a six game homestand against the Round Rock Express at Greater Nevada Field. Another six game series against the Las Vegas Aviators begins on May 17. The final home game of the month is vs. the Tacoma Rainiers on May 31.

2022 Reno Margarita Day Crawl - Saturday, May 7, 2022, 12 noon to 6 p.m. Margarita Day will be a chance to soak up some rays in a relaxed atmosphere where we can all enjoy some good bubbly, listen to some tunes and stroll around hitting our favorite bars. Initially we will only be releasing 500 cups ($10 each) to sell for this event. We'll initially be keeping it to 10 bars as well. Visit the website for more details and to buy cups online.

2022 Reno/Sparks Walk to Defeat ALS - Saturday, May 7, 2022. 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Check-in at 10:30 a.m., walk start at 12 noon. This year, it's at Sparks Marina Park. All walk routes are wheelchair accessible and Walk Day activities include something for all ages. There is no fee to participate.

Sci-On! Science + Fiction Film Festival - May 4 - 6, 2022. This year, science and science-fiction activities and film screenings will be at the Fleischmann Planetarium on the UNR campus. Tickets are available online. (775) 830-5295.

Discover Your Parks Free Walks - Enjoy in-person Discover Your Parks Walks during 2022. They occur every Thursday from April through September. The first walk this month is at Wedekind Regional Park on May 5. The next on May 12 at Crystal Peak Park. Visit the web page for a full list. Attendance is limited and you must register to participate. If you would rather, you can virtually visit several popular parks and trails with guided hike presentations available from "Virtual Guided Hikes" on the TMPF website.

Margarita Day Crawl - Saturday, May 7, 2022, 12 noon to 6 p.m. Margarita Day will be a chance to soak up some rays in a relaxed atmosphere where we can all enjoy some good margaritas, listen to some tunes and stroll around hitting up our favorite bars. Initially only 500 cups will be sold. Get your cups online ahead of time.

Reno River Festival - Saturday and Sunday, May 7 - 8, 2022. The annual Reno River Festival is at Wingfield Park in downtown Reno. This event is free to attend and has become one of the top draws among Reno's big spring, summer, and fall events. Unfortunately, there will be no whitewater kayaking competitions this year for various reasons, but there is much more. Attractions include live music, local craft beer, local food, local craft vendors, the Reno River Roll, a cornhole championship contest, plus the thrills of the Reno Tahoe Adventure Park. General admission is $10 for both days.

May Arboretum Society Spring Plant Sale - Friday through Sunday, May 13 - 15, 2022. Friday is the member's only preview from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Saturday and Sunday are 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Come stroll Burke and Plaza gardens where there will be over 5,000 plants for sale. All plants will be zoned for our area and most you will not find in local garden shops. You will find a variety of shrubs, flowers, cactus, tomatoes and more. Look for gardening and ornamentation vendor pop-ups. At the Wilbur D. May Arboretum in Rancho San Rafael Regional Park, 1595 N. Sierra St. in Reno.

Bowers Mansion Living History Day - Saturday, May 14, 2022, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Various exhibits and demonstrations will be happening inside the mansion. A mansion history talk will take place at the top of each hour and Mrs. Eilley Bowers will also be "in residence" if you'd like a chance to meet her. Enjoy a mansion history talk at the top of each hour. Self-guided tours are $7 for adults and $5 for children and seniors (cash only). Masks required. (775) 849-1825. Hands ON! Second Saturday at the Nevada Museum of Art - Saturday, May 14, 2022. Come to the Nevada Museum of Art for fun for the whole family, including storytelling, art activities, live performances, and all current exhibits. This month, come to celebrate the art of Jean LaMarr. Admission to the Museum is free for all on Second Saturdays.

Headlock on Hunger - Saturday, May 21, 2022, 7 p.m. Headlock on Hunger is a campaign and non-profit event that aims to raise awareness, and combat the hunger issue that is affecting the children of the Reno/ Sparks area. All proceeds and food collected during our pro wrestling event and food drive are donated to the Food Bank of Northern Nevada. General admission tickets are $5 and available online. At Reed High School, 1350 Baring Blvd. in Sparks.

Idlewild Health Walks for Citizens with Dementia - on Tuesdays during 2022 at 10 a.m. Truckee Meadows Parks Foundation (TMPF) is offering a series of free, weekly interpretive walks for people living with dementia and their caregivers. Idlewild Health Walks are an extension of the Discover Your Parks walks from TMPF, which encourage people to get outdoors to explore and care for local parks. Meet at the Truckee Meadows Parks Foundation office at 50 Cowan Drive in Idlewild Park. For more information, call (775) 410-1702 or email info@tmparksfoundation.org.

Programs on the Porch at Bowers Mansion - Friday, May 20, 2022, 7 p.m. Programs on the Porch for 2022 features performances by local musicians. A variety of talents will be showcased during each Friday night of the series. The performance series is free, however donations are accepted. Bowers Mansion Regional Park is south of Reno, in Washoe Valley at 4005 Old U.S. Highway 395 North. More programs will be on May 27, June 3, 10, 17.

Hot August Nights Spring Fever Revival - Friday through Sunday, May 20 - 22, 2022. This annual festival will get the engines warmed up and ready for the main event as we Show-n-Shine for three days with classic vehicles, live entertainment, a vendor village featuring art and craft vendors, memorabilia, and a variety of food vendors. 39th Annual Chili on the Comstock and Craft Beer Tour - Saturday and Sunday, May 21 - 22, 2022. This event has participants sampling chili and craft brews from various merchants and booths spread out in zones around Virginia City, giving visitors the chance to discover more of the historic mining town than ever before. Ticket options give attendees the option of sampling from 12 chili booths including professional and local chefs, 12 craft beer samples, or for a better value and even more fun, a combination of the two. Junior Naturalist Program - "Botany Bonanza" - Saturday, May 21, 2022. This month we'll explore the Wilbur D. May Arboretum. You will participate in learning about the trees of the arboretum and what botany is. We have lots of fun activities planned. Brought to you by Truckee Meadows Parks Foundation.

Nevada Chamber Music Festival Summerfest - Thursday through Sunday, May 26 - 29, 2022. Five concerts in four days featuring musicians and ensembles from around the world. Sponsored by the Reno Chamber Orchestra. Performances are at the University of Nevada, Reno and other locations around town. Visit the website to see the lineup and to purchase tickets online. Idlewild Park Train - Friday, May 27, 2022. The Idlewild Park train begins 2022 operations on the Friday before Memorial Day and continues running on Thursdays through Sundays until Labor Day. This makes a fun family adventure and the fare is still just $2, with kids 2 and under free on an adult's lap.

Student Outreach Clinics from UNR - General and Pediatrics Clinic - Saturday, May 28, 2022, 8 a.m. to 12 noon. This clinic provides general medical care, including complete physical exams and nutrition counseling. The Pediatric Clinic provides medical care for pediatric patients from newborns to teenagers. Clinics are by appointment only. To schedule, call (775) 391-0632 or email studentoutreachclinic@med.unr.edu. Clinics are held at the University Health Building, 745 W. Moana Lane in Reno.

Memorial Day Weekend - Memorial Day is observed on Monday, May 30, 2022, with numerous activities and events around Reno during this first big holiday weekend of the year.
