March is... March happenings... Rural Nevada Projects - Tuesday, March 2, 2021, 5:30 p.m. The Nevada Preservation Foundation was founded in late 2013 by a small group of local Las Vegas preservationists, with the intent of educating the building industry and general public on economic, social, and environmental benefits of historic preservation. This free program is presented via Zoom and is brought to you by the Historic Reno Preservation Society. It is one of a series, with others scheduled in the future. Gardening in Nevada: The Bartley Ranch Series - Tuesday, March 2, 2021. This free class is titled "Training and Pruning Fruit Trees," presented by Certified Arborist and Cooperative Extension Master Gardener Volunteer Michael Janik. He will discuss the basics of fruit tree pruning, pruning to maximize production and more. Classes are from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. and online only via Zoom. Other Tuesday classes this month are on on March 9, 16, 23 and 30. Student Outreach Clinics from UNR - General and Pediatrics Clinic - Tuesday, March 2, 2021, 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. The Comprehensive/General Clinic provides general medical care, including complete physical exams and nutrition counseling. The Pediatric Clinic provides medical care for pediatric patients from newborns to teenagers. Clinics are by appointment only. Adaptive Reuse and Revitalization of the Downtown Post Office - Tuesday, March 2, 2021, 5:30 p.m. In 1934, a new post office opened at 50 S. Virginia alongside the Truckee River. It was a beautiful Art Moderne / ZigZag Modern building designed by Frederic DeLongchamps with Edward Parsons. It opened during the main decade of the divorce era and was an extremely busy "General Delivery" site. This is a virtual presentation via Zoom. Presented by Bernie Carter. SNOWFEST is a ten day winter festival supporting local non profits, public programs, student organizations, and educational scholarships. "Victorian Radicals: From the Pre-Raphaelites to the Arts and Crafts Movement" - exhibit at the Nevada Museum of Art opens on Sunday, March 7, 2021. Drawn from the collection of the city of Birmingham, United Kingdom, Victorian Radicals brings together more than 145 paintings, works on paper, and decorative objects - many of which have never been exhibited outside the U.K. - to illuminate this dynamic period of British art. The Museum is open 6 days a week, advance ticketing required. Discover Science Lecture Series - Thursday, March 11, 2021. Dr. Wendy Calvin is a planetary scientist and member of the Mars Exploration Rover (MER) team. The talk will discuss the evolution of orbital information for selecting landing sites, the improvement and increased sophistication in engineering our roving vehicles and the scientific discoveries and accomplishments of our six-wheeled Martian explorers. It's free to attend, but you must register for this online webinar, which starts at 7 p.m. Roses are Rad Winter Film Festival - entry deadline is Friday, March 12, 2021. This is the culmination of a video contest sponsored by Mt. Rose Ski Tahoe. The best videos will be featured in the event, which will show on skirose.com. Winners announced online on March 19, 2021. Leprechaun Race Virtual 5K Run / Walk - Friday through Sunday, March 12 - 14, 2021. Between March 12 at 12:01 a.m. and March 14 at 10 a.m., run or walk a 5K (3.1 miles) anywhere that you want and where it is safe, even on a treadmill. Submit your time during this time window. Yes, there still will be our speedy real life leprechaun to beat. If your time is faster than hers, then plan to pick up your special prize when you pick up your race goodies. On Sunday March 14 from noon to 4 p.m., drive through the Discovery Museum parking lot to pick up your race goodies, a race shirt if you purchased one, and take a photo with our real life Leprechaun. The Leprechaun Race is a benefit for the Terry Lee Wells Nevada Discovery Museum. Science Saturdays at the National Automobile Museum - Saturday, March 13, 2021. Join in on an adventure that is out of this world - "Exploring Mars." Tickets are sold per family group starting at $36. Admission is limited to 8 groups. For participants age 8 and up. Children under 13 must be accompanied by an adult. The event is from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Pre-registration is required approximately two days before the event. Call the Museum at (775) 333-9300 for more information. Hands ON! Second Saturdays at the Nevada Museum of Art - Saturday, March 13, 2021. Come to the Nevada Museum of Art for fun for the whole family, including storytelling, art activities, live performances, and all current exhibits. Admission to the Museum is free for all on Second Saturdays, but you must visit the website to obtain advanced admission tickets and choose the time for your visit. Hours are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Winter Hike Series from Truckee Meadows Parks Foundation - Saturday, March 13, 2021, 9 a.m to 12 noon. Get outside this winter and explore some of Reno's local parks at your own pace. This hike will be approximately 1 miles at Reno's Idlewild Park. Free hot drinks and snacks will be served. The Women's Clinic provides medical care aimed specifically at female concerns. This includes services such as Pap smears, breast exams, STD counseling, pregnancy tests, IUD placements, and physical exams for both gynecological and non-gynecological concerns. Set your clocks forward at 2 a.m. on Sunday morning. If you don't plan on being awake then, do it before going to bed on Saturday night. Washoe County Schools Spring Break - March 15 - 26, 2021. Check out all of the cool spring break camps and other fun activities happening during this break in the school action. There are lots of choices, so check it out and sign up early for the best selection of activities and camps. 30th Annual Rocky Mountain Oyster Fry - Saturday, March 13, 2021, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Go up to Virginia City for this popular event. Cooks from around the west fry, smoke or grill these delectable concoctions in a way that will make you forget what you're really eating. Dress to impress in your most festive or outlandish St. Patty’s Day garb. There are a limited number of tickets available in order to ensure safety guidelines are followed. This is also the day for the St. Patrick's Day Cruise (12 noon to 1 p.m.), taking the place of the usual St. Patrick's Day Parade and other St. Patrick's Day weekend of activities. (Note: Tickets for this event are sold out.) St. Patrick's Day - Wednesday, March 17, 2021. Lots of parties and green beer all around the Reno / Tahoe region. Nevada Historical Society presents High Noon with Neal Cobb: History of Model Dairy - Thursday, March 18, 2021, 12 noon to 1 p.m. Neil Brooks' grandfather C.W. Brooks founded Model Dairy with Holstein cows and two milkers. Neil's presentation will focus on the history of Model Dairy from 1906 to 1977 and will feature pictures and stories from throughout the years. This virtual event is free through the Washoe County Library, but registration is required. First Day of Spring - Spring begins with the Equinox on Saturday, March 20, 2021. Reno Wine Walk - Saturday, March 20, 2021, 2 p.m. The Riverwalk Merchants present this fun event every third Saturday of the month. Visit any of the participating merchants with $30 and receive your wine glass and hand stamp (with photo ID), then make the rounds sampling wines at numerous businesses in the area. You can also purchase tickets online. This is a 21+ event. Pets and strollers are not advised. For more information, call 775-825-WALK(9255). Rabbits and Rodents Junior Naturalist Program from Truckee Meadows Parks Foundation - Saturday, March 20, 2021. Registration for the March virtual program is now open. Join us from your living room as we broadcast directly to you from Crystal Peak Park. We will be learning about rabbits and rodents by exploring our local environment and doing exciting activities together. This month, our activity will be using common household supplies or things you can easily find in your favorite, local open space. Family Health Festival - Saturday, March 20, 2021, 9 a.m. to 12 noon. In a collaborative effort to connect health and community resources to community members of all ages (while supplies last), local partners are hosting a free Family Health Festival in a drive-thru format at Reed High School in Sparks, 1350 Baring Blvd.
