Happenings during January 2023 include...
Happy New Year! - Saturday, January 1, 2022. Student Outreach Clinics from UNR - Women's Clinic - Saturday, January 7, 2023, 8 a.m. to 12 noon. This clinic provides medical care aimed specifically at female concerns. This includes services such as Pap smears, breast exams, STD counseling, pregnancy tests, IUD placements, and physical exams for both gynecological and non-gynecological concerns. Pregnancy care is not offered. By appointment only. To schedule, call (775) 391-0632 or email studentoutreachclinic@med.unr.edu. Clinics are held at the University Health Building, 745 W. Moana Lane in Reno. Come in from the Cold Family Entertainment Series - Saturdays, January 7, 14, 21, 28, 2023. "Come in from the Cold" is held on Saturday evenings in the Western Heritage Interpretive Center at Bartley Ranch Regional Park in Reno. The 2023 series is in January, February, and March. The doors open at 5:30 p.m. with performances starting at 7 p.m. Seating is limited, so arriving early at this popular event is a good idea. A $5 per person donation is requested at the door. The January 7 performance will be by the Northern NV Bluegrass Monday Night Volunteers. Hands ON! Second Saturday at the Nevada Museum of Art - Saturday, January 14, 2023. Come to the Nevada Museum of Art for a day of fun for the whole family, including storytelling, art activities, live performances, and all current exhibits. Admission to the Museum is free for all on Second Saturdays. Hours are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. "Expedition: Dinosaur" at the Wilbur D. May Museum - January 14 through April 30, 2023. An interactive exhibit at the Wilbur D. May Museum at Rancho San Rafael Regional Park in Reno. This exhibit will feature 11 animatronic dinosaurs, interactive excavation stations, and a fossil stamp scavenger hunt. Special group rates are available. This will be an exhibit of Jurassic proportions. The entry fee is $10 for adults, $9 for children 3 to 17 and seniors. Kids under 3 are free. Hours at the Wilbur D. May Museum are Wednesday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sunday from 12 noon to 4 p.m. The museum is closed on Monday and Tuesday. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day - Monday, January 16, 2023. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day is an official national holiday observed across the country, with most federal and local government offices closed for the day. There are celebrations and activities to celebrate the day in the Reno area, plus ways you can volunteer as part of the concurrent Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service. Free Days at National Parks - The first free day in 2023 is Martin Luther King Jr. Day on Monday, January 16. There are several more during 2023. There are many free days on USFS and BLM land as well. Enjoy your public lands and save money while doing it. Reno Wine Walk - Saturday, January 21, 2023, 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. The Riverwalk Merchants present this fun event every third Saturday of the month. Visit any of the participating start merchants with $30 and receive your wine glass and hand stamp (with photo ID), then make the rounds sampling wines at numerous businesses in the area. This is a 21+ event. The theme this month is Winter Fest. Pets and strollers are not advised. For more information, call 775-825-WALK(9255). January Junior Naturalist Program - Saturday, January 21, 2023, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. The Junior Naturalist Program is a free outdoor program for children of all ages to learn about local parks, plants, animals, and the environment. Parent/guardian required. Join us at the Rosewood Nature Study Area to learn about wintertime in the wetland. Students and their families will discover how all the animals in the wetland ecosystem behave in the winter. Sponsored by Truckee Meadows Parks Foundation. Chinese New Year - Sunday, January 22, 2023. Chinese New Year marks the transition between zodiac signs: 2023 is the Year of the Rabbit. Celebrations last up to 16 days, but only the first 7 days are considered a public holiday. Celebrations culminate with the Lantern Festival on February 5, 2023. Why all homes should be tested for radon - Wednesday, January 25, 2023, 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Free presentation; learn how radon gas in your home can cause lung cancer. Get a free radon test kit. At Northwest Reno Library, 2325 Robb Dr. in Reno. Reno-Tahoe Senior Winter Games - January 30 to February 14, 2023. "Age is no barrier" at the Reno-Tahoe Senior Winter Games. The Games feature a series of competitions organized in Olympics fashion, with gold, silver, and bronze medals awarded to the top three finishers in each event. There are both individual and team competitions. Registration is now open for both individuals and teams. The basic fee is $40, plus an additional fee for specific events.
