Big events during August, 2024 include...
Galena Campfire Programs - Friday, August 2, 2024, 9 p.m. This week's program features star gazing with the Astronomical Society of Nevada. Note that the program starts a bit later than usual. The programs are free, though donations are welcomed to support the program. S'more treats available to enjoy around the campfire at starting at 7:30 p.m. Eagle Meadow, Galena Creek Regional Park, North Entrance, 18250 Mt. Rose Hwy., Reno. Hot August Nights Kickoff in Virginia City - Friday and Saturday, August 2 - 3, 2024. Celebrate Hot August Nights in this historic mining town just outside of Reno with cruising events, live entertainment, poker walk fun and more. Hours are 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. both days. Cruising will be from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m. Hot August Nights in Reno and Sparks - Sunday through Sunday, August 4 - 11, 2024. There is so much happening I couldn't even begin to list it, so refer to the Hot August Nights event schedule to see what is going on when and where. The whole Hot August Nights website is excellent and can probably answer just about all of your questions. Levitt AMP Carson City Music Series at the Brewery Arts Center - Saturday, August 3, 2024, 7 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. Featuring Big Brother & The Holding Co. These are all free outdoor shows. The public is invited to bring their own picnics, blankets and lawn chairs to the concerts, which will have an open setting. There will be food trucks, drink vendors and kid's activities at every concert. The Levitt AMP concert series is located at 449 West King Street at the corner of King and Minnesota Streets in Carson City. Be My Neighbor Day - Saturday, August 3, 2024, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Free community event sponsored by PBS Reno and other organizations. There will be musical performances, Taiko drummers, storytime, meet and greet with Daniel Tiger and Katerina Kittycat and more. Donations accepted for Food Bank of Northern Nevada, RennerVation Foundation and Children's Cabinet. At Idlewild Park in Reno. Library Book Sale - August 3 - 11, 2024. Library book sales are in the mall space next door to the Sierra View Library in the Reno Town Mall. Preview day for Friends of Washoe County Library members is on the Friday before each sale period, from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. If you aren't a member, you can join Friends at the door. The sale is open to all every day from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. 2024 Back to School Vaccination Events - Saturday, August 3, 10, 17, 2024. On these dates and more, Northern Nevada Public Health (NNPH) and Community Health Alliance (CHA) are hosting a number of Back To School Vaccination events. Insurance is not required. The immunizations are required for students to attend Washoe County schools. The vaccines, which include DTap/DT, IPV, MMR and more, will be available at NNPH, 1001 E. 9th St., Building B, and various other locations. For more information call 775-328-2003. Classic Tahoe Festival - through August 4, 2024. Each summer, Classical Tahoe brings together America's leading classical musicians for a three-week festival of orchestra concerts on the campus of Sierra Nevada University in Incline Village, Nev. Individual and season tickets are available online. Herpetology Education Expo - Sunday, August 4, 2024, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Learn about and experience reptiles and amphibians up close with the Cold-Blooded Critters 4-H Herpetology Club during this expo. Club members will present their own live projects and teach the public about these often misunderstood yet fascinating creatures. Event involves live animals. Visit the website for waivers required for all participants. Registration recommended. At South Valleys Library, 15650A Wedge Parkway in south Reno. Reno Aces Baseball - August 6 - 11, 2024. The Aces take on the Tacoma Rainiers for this six game homestand. On August 20 - 25, it's home again for six games against the Las Vegas Aviators. Lazy 5 Summer Music Series - Wednesday, August 7, 2024, 6:30 p.m. This series of free concerts includes food trucks available during each show. Bring blankets and low-back chairs to get comfortable on the lawn. The show this evening features Caltucky. The final show of the 2024 series is on August 14, 2024. Harmony on the River - Thursday, August 8, 2024, 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. This free community event is set to enchant you in the Reno Riverwalk District. Join us in West Street Plaza, next to Wingfield Park. Immerse yourself in live music by the talented Reno Philharmonic. Lawn chairs recommended. Sun Rays at Reno Public Market - Friday, August 9, 2024, 8 p.m. to 10 p.m. Free live concert features the Sun Rays, Reno's premiere surf-rock band, covering classic rock instrumentals like "Sleepwalk" and other hits from the days of Dick Dale and the Bel-Airs. Reno Public Market is at 299 E. Plumb Lane in Reno. Hands ON! Second Saturdays - Saturday, August 10, 2024. Come to the Nevada Museum of Art for a day of fun family activities and free admission for all, sponsored by the Estelle J. Kelsey Foundation. Hours are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. 160 West Liberty in Reno. Back to School Expo - Saturday, August 10, 2024, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Join the Washoe County School District at the Back to School Expo. The Expo offers information on school transportation, changes to school meals, and resources for families and our students. This event is free for all families. There will also be school supply giveaways and a WCSD Job Fair. At the Reno Town Mall, 4001 S. Virginia Street in Reno. Lake Tahoe Shakespeare Festival - through August 25, 2024. Come to Sand Harbor at Lake Tahoe to enjoy Shakespeare performances and other entertainment. These shows are held in what's been called America's most beautiful venue. Visit my article for details about tickets, seating, getting to Sand Harbor and other important information. "Bye Bye Birdie" at Bartley Ranch Regional Park - August 9 - 10, 15 - 18, 23 - 24, 2024. All shows start at 7:30 p.m. Get ready to be whisked back to the fabulous fifties when Sierra School of Performing Arts presents Bye Bye Birdie. Inspired by the iconic 1963 film featuring Dick Van Dyke, Janet Leigh, and Ann-Margret, this musical is a vibrant celebration of the era. Tickets are available online. Reno-Tahoe Senior Summer Games - August 12 - 30, 2024. The Reno-Tahoe Senior Summer Games is a program of competitions styled after the real Olympic Games and designed for area citizens age 50 and above. The basic registration fee for all participants is $40. There is an additional fee for each sport. Get the details and links to registration at "2024 Reno-Tahoe Senior Summer Games." Raise the River - Thursday, August 15, 2024, 4:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. You are invited to the annual Raise the River fundraising event for Keep Truckee Meadows Beautiful (KTMB). It will be at the National Automobile Museum patio along the banks of the Truckee River. Enjoy a mix-and-mingle cocktail reception with libations and unique sensory experiences with our sponsors. A delectable dinner will be served family-style, with sweet treats from Grand Sierra Resort. This is a 21+ event. Tickets and tables are available online. Dog Days of Summer Dance Festival - Friday through Sunday, August 16 - 18, 2024. The Pioneer Center in downtown Reno invites you to this free, 3-night event. Each evening performance features a different line-up of local dance companies along with stellar guest artists creating original dance works for the stage – there's something for everyone. Outside at the Pioneer Center's E.L. Cord Plaza. The plaza opens nightly at 6 p.m. for a 7:30 p.m. performance. This event spotlights the lifesaving work that SPCA of Northern Nevada provides our community. Help raise donations for this local nonprofit organization. You won't want to miss our nightly Pup Parade Fashion Show, but leave your own dogs at home. Northern Nevada International Dragon Boat Festival - Saturday, August 17, 2024. This event is free for spectators and will be at Sparks Marina Park. Fun for the entire family. The festival features all-day racing, local vendors, entertainment, Health and Wellness Village, Beer Garden, Food Truck Bazaar and more. It benefits Immunize Nevada. (775) 353-2376. Reno Wine Walk - Saturday, August 17, 2024, 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. The Riverwalk Merchants present this fun event every third Saturday of the month. Visit any of the participating merchants with $30 and receive your wine glass and hand stamp (with photo ID), then make the rounds sampling wines at numerous businesses in the area. Junior Naturalist Program from Truckee Meadows Parks Foundation - Saturday, August 17, 2024, between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. This month the program is "Into The Cosmos," at Burgess Park in Sparks. Junior Naturalists will explore cosmology with fun games and activities. This outdoor program is for kids of all ages and it's free. You can register online. NV Energy Family Festival - Tuesday, August 20, 2024, 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Join us for an evening of fun, education, and community engagement. This event, hosted by NV Energy in partnership with United Way of Northern Nevada and the Sierra (UWNNS), brings together NV Energy employees, their families, friends, and the public for an unforgettable experience. At NV Energy, 6100 Neil Road in Reno. 38th Annual Bowers Bluegrass Festival - Friday through Sunday, August 23 - 25, 2024. This year's festival includes Friday, Saturday and Sunday shows at Bowers Mansion Main Stage. Camping available at nearby Davis Creek Regional Park and Washoe Lake State Park. Jamming is allowed 24 hours at Washoe Lake. Tickets are available online. Bowers Mansion is at 4005 Bowers Mansion Road in Washoe Valley. Nevada Wolf Pack Football - Saturday, August 24, 2024. The Wolf Pack opens its 2024 season with a home game at Mackay Stadium vs. the Southern Methodist University Mustangs. The next weekend (August 31, 2024) features an away game vs. the Troy University Trojans down south in Troy, Alabama. Sparks Water Lantern Festival - Saturday, August 24, 2024, 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. At Sparks Marina Park, 300 Howard Drive in Sparks. This is a family friendly event that can be shared by everyone. Friends, families, neighbors, and lots of people that you haven't met can come together to create a peaceful, memorable experience. Water Lantern Festival brings people together to Light The Water in a magical night that includes food, music, and beauty as the lanterns reflect upon the water. Tickets available online. Tahoe Brewfest - Saturday, August 24, 2024, 12 noon to 5 p.m. Tahoe Brewfest brings together the best craft brews from California and around the country. Paired with unbeatable mountain views, music, arts and mouth watering brew bites. It's a brew-lovers paradise. Located along Ski Run Blvd. in South Lake Tahoe, CA. 53rd Running of the Journal Jog 8K - Sunday, August 25, 2024. Reno's oldest footrace is a family friendly event and a great challenge to all levels of runners and walkers. The Running Stroller event is back so a parent can run with their stroller and try to place in the top 3. All the rest will enter in the Run/Walk/Walking stroller event. Starts at 7:25 a.m. at Reno High School. There are a number of perks for racers and awards for the top finishers. No pets. You can register online. Valhalla Renaissance Faire - Saturday (10 a.m. to 6 p.m.) and Sunday (10 a.m. to 5 p.m.), August 24 - 25, 2024. After a three-year hiatus, the Valhalla Renaissance Faire is set to return for the fall 2024 season. Prepare to step back in time and immerse yourself in a world of chivalry, enchantment, and merriment. At the Tahoe Valley Campground in South Lake Tahoe, CA. No dogs - only trained service animals allowed. Tickets available online. Burning Man 2024 - Burning Man at Black Rock City and is playing out from August 25 through September 2, 2024. The 2024 art theme is "Curiouser & Curiouser." Best in the West Nugget Rib Cook Off - August 28 to September 2, 2024. 10:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday to Sunday, 10:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Monday. The Nugget Rib Cook-Off is really a cooking competition between the professional barbeque teams that will also be serving ribs and fixins to the public during the event. There are other things to see and do for all ages, including free entertainment, Crafter's Crossing, a big kids' area with rides and activities, and a Beer Garden. At Victorian Square in Sparks. No dogs. Food Truck Friday - Friday, August 30, 2024, 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. This is the last 2024 date for Food Truck Friday, Reno's biggest food truck gathering. Come to Idlewild Park to sample a huge variety of food from around 50 food trucks.
