Big events during August, 2023 include...

Hot August Nights in Reno and Sparks - Tuesday through Sunday, August 1 - 6, 2023. There is so much happening I couldn't even begin to list it, so refer to the Hot August Nights event schedule to see what is going on when and where. The whole Hot August Nights website is excellent and can probably answer just about all of your questions.

Lazy 5 Summer Music Series - Wednesday, August 2, 2023 6:30 p.m. This series of free concerts includes food trucks available during each show. Bring blankets and low-back chairs to get comfortable on the lawn. The show this evening features Coburn Station. Additional shows are on August 9 and 16, 2023.

Galena Campfire Programs - Friday, August 4, 2023, 8 p.m. This week's program features bluegrass music with Sage Creek. The programs are free, though donations are welcomed to support the program. S'more treats available to enjoy around the campfire at starting at 7:30 p.m. Eagle Meadow, Galena Creek Regional Park, North Entrance, 18250 Mt. Rose Hwy., Reno.

Levitt AMP Carson City Music Series at the Brewery Arts Center - Saturday, August 5, 2023, 7 p.m. Featuring Curley Taylor & Zydeco Trouble. These are all free outdoor shows shows. The public is invited to bring their own picnics, blankets and lawn chairs to the concerts, which will have an open setting. There will be food trucks, drink vendors and kid's activities at every concert. The Levitt AMP concert series is located at 449 West King Street at the corner of King and Minnesota Streets in Carson City. The next show is on August 12, featuring The Peelers.

Library Book Sale - August 5 - 13, 2023. Library book sales are in the mall space next door to the Sierra View Library in the Reno Town Mall. Preview day for Friends of Washoe County Library members is on the Friday before each sale period, from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. If you aren't a member, you can join Friends at the door. The sale is open to all every day from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

A Tribute to Rodgers & Hammerstein - Monday, August 7, 2023, 7:30 p.m. Join the Reno Phil and conductor Jason Altieri for a tribute to one of the most revered and prolific song writing teams in Broadway history. Concert is on the outdoor stage at Lake Tahoe's Sand Harbor. Visit the website for ticket information.

Reno Aces Baseball - August 8 - 13, 2023. The Aces take on the Salt Lake Bees for this six game homestand. On August 15 - 20, it's home again against the Las Vegas Aviators. The month ends with three home games against the El Paso Chihuahuas on August 29 - 31, 2023.

Dragon Lights Reno - through August 13, 2023. Dragon Lights Reno will again illuminate the Wilbur D. May Arboretum and Botanical Gardens in Rancho San Rafael Park with all new lantern displays. Forty-two larger-than-life lantern sculptures, lit by thousands of LED lights, will transform the arboretum into a luminous wonderland during mid-summer nights. Dragon Lights Reno includes an interactive playground with lantern displays that visitors can touch, play with, and even sit on. Inside the arboretum, visitors will also find a Lantern Food Court that offers a wide selection of food and drinks from both local and traveling food vendors. It is best to purchase tickets online ahead of time. Tickets at the box office may not be available on any night that the festival reaches capacity. Classic Tahoe Festival - through August 17, 2023. Each summer, Classical Tahoe brings together America's leading classical musicians for a three-week festival of orchestra concerts on the campus of Sierra Nevada University in Incline Village, Nev. Individual and season tickets are available online.

Lake Tahoe Shakespeare Festival - through August 20, 2023. Come to Sand Harbor at Lake Tahoe to enjoy Shakespeare performances and other entertainment. These shows are held in what's been called America's most beautiful venue. Visit my article for details about tickets, seating, getting to Sand Harbor and other important information.

Hands ON! Second Saturdays - Saturday, August 12, 2023. Come to the Nevada Museum of Art for a day of fun family activities and free admission for all, sponsored by the Estelle J. Kelsey Foundation. Hours are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. 160 West Liberty in Reno.

Nevada Humane Society Duck Race and Festival - Saturday, August 12, 2023, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The Duck Race and Festival is a benefit event supporting the Nevada Humane Society (NHS) in Reno and Carson City. In addition to the duck race itself, other family-friendly things to enjoy include vendors, food trucks, a beer garden, games for the kids, pet adoptions, and more. Admission is free. At Wingfield Park in downtown Reno.

Discover Your Parks Series - Wednesday, August 16, 2023. Truckee Meadows Parks Foundation is leading free program events in different parks located in Washoe County from April through November, 2023. This program will be at Crystal Peak Park. Others will be on September, October and November.

"The Addams Family" at Bartley Ranch Regional Park - August 11 - 12, 17 - 20, 25 - 26, 2023. All shows start at 7:30 p.m. Sierra School of Performing Arts presents this show at the Robert Z. Hawkins Amphitheater, a wonderful venue to watch live theater under the stars on a warm summer night. The Play is a comical feast that embraces the wackiness in every family, features an original story and it's every father's nightmare. Tickets are available online.

Reno-Tahoe Senior Summer Games - August 14 through September 1, 2023. The Reno-Tahoe Senior Summer Games is a program of competitions styled after the real Olympic Games and designed for area citizens age 50 and above. The basic registration fee for all participants is $40. There is an additional fee for each sport. Get the details and links to registration at "2023 Reno-Tahoe Senior Summer Games."

Raise the River - Thursday, August 17, 2023, 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. You are invited to the annual Raise the River fundraising event for Keep Truckee Meadows Beautiful (KTMB). It will be in the Sensory Garden at Idlewild Park in Reno. The evening offers a sensory experience with local craft drinks and interactive sensory activities, along with a local-focused, sit-down dinner prepared by chef Mark Estee of Liberty Food and Wine Exchange. This is a 21+ event. Tickets and tables are available online.

Dog Days of Summer Dance Festival - Friday through Sunday, August 18 - 20, 2023. The Pioneer Center in downtown Reno invites you to this free, 3-night event. Each evening performance features a different line-up of local dance companies along with stellar guest artists creating original dance works for the stage – there's something for everyone. Outside at the Pioneer Center's E.L. Cord Plaza. The plaza opens nightly at 6 p.m. for a 7:30 p.m. performance. This event spotlights the lifesaving work that SPCA of Northern Nevada provides our community. Help raise donations for this local nonprofit organization. You won't want to miss our nightly Pup Parade Fashion Show, but leave your own dogs at home.

Northern Nevada International Dragon Boat Festival - Saturday, August 19, 2023. This event is free for spectators and will be at Sparks Marina Park. Fun for the entire family. The festival features all-day racing, local vendors, entertainment, Health and Wellness Village, Beer Garden, Food Truck Bazaar and more. It benefits Immunize Nevada. (775) 353-2376.

Reno Wine Walk - Saturday, August 19, 2023, 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. The Riverwalk Merchants present this fun event every third Saturday of the month. Visit any of the participating merchants with $30 and receive your wine glass and hand stamp (with photo ID), then make the rounds sampling wines at numerous businesses in the area. This is a 21+ event. Pets and strollers are not advised. For more information, call 775-825-WALK(9255).

Reno Aloha Festival - Saturday and Sunday, August 19 - 20, 2023, 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. The annual Reno Aloha Festival is at Reno's Wingfield Park. This free event is a cultural showcase, preserving the unique traditions of the Hawaiian Islands. Experience the Pacific Islands in dance, music and food. Shop the various vendors selling Polynesian merchandise and let the kids enjoy Keiki Village for fun interactive activities such as arts/crafts, hula lessons and Island stories.

Northern Nevada's First Black Business Month Celebration - starts on Monday, August 21, 2023. The celebration involves five free community events presented by Black-owned businesses. These are on August 21, 21 - 26, 23, 28, 29, 2023. From exploring the cuisine of Ethiopia and enjoying the fruits of urban farming, to experiencing locally roasted Uncle Nearest whiskey rested coffee and reaching new heights through pole fitness, #BlackOwnedInReno celebrates the beauty that diversity brings to our community. 37th Annual Bowers Mansion Bluegrass Festival - Thursday through Sunday, August 24 - 27, 2023, 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. This year's festival includes an optional Thursday jam camp and chuckwagon supper at Washoe Lake State Park, Friday and Saturday shows at Bowers Mansion Main Stage and a Sunday Go To Meetin' Gospel Show at Davis Creek Campground. Camping available at nearby Davis Creek Regional Park. Tickets are available online. Bowers Mansion is at 4005 Bowers Mansion Road in Washoe Valley.

Reno Chalk Art and Music Festival - Friday through Sunday, August 25 - 27, 2023. More than 150 of the best chalk artists in the nation transform blacktop into one-of-a-kind masterpieces at Reno's Atlantis Casino. This is the largest chalk art event in the region and features live art installations, live music, food and drink experiences, local art and craft shops, and a Kids Zone. Entry is $10 for 18 and over, free for 17 and under. Hours Friday and Saturday are 8 a.m. to 10 p.m., Sunday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. The Atlantis is at 3800 South Virginia Street in Reno.

Tahoe Brewfest - Saturday, August 26, 2023, 12 noon to 5 p.m. Tahoe Brewfest brings together the best craft brews from California and around the country. Paired with unbeatable mountain views, music, arts and mouth watering brew bites. It's a brew-lovers paradise. Located along Ski Run Blvd. in South Lake Tahoe, CA.

52nd Running of the Journal Jog 8K - Sunday, August 27, 2023. Reno's oldest footrace is a family friendly event and a great challenge to all levels of runners and walkers. The Running Stroller event is back so a parent can run with their stroller and try to place in the top 3. All the rest will enter in the Run/Walk/Walking stroller event. Starts at 7:25 a.m. at Reno High School. There are a number of perks for racers and awards for the top finishers. No pets. You can register online. The deadline is August 26.

Burning Man 2023 - Burning Man is back at Black Rock City and will play out from August 27 through September 4, 2023. The 2023 theme is "Animalia."

Best in the West Nugget Rib Cook Off - August 30 to September 4, 2023. 10:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday to Sunday, 10:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Monday. The Nugget Rib Cook-Off is really a cooking competition between the professional barbeque teams that will also be serving ribs and fixins to the public during the event. There are other things to see and do for all ages, including free entertainment, Crafter's Crossing, a big kids' area with rides and activities, and a Beer Garden. At Victorian Square in Sparks. No dogs.

Nevada Wolf Pack Football - Saturday, September 2, 2023. The Wolf Pack opens its 2023 season with an away game at USC in Los Angeles. The next weekend (September 9, 2023) features a home game at Mackay Stadium vs. Idaho.
