The Virginia & Truckee Railroad gets into the Halloween spirit by offering a number of fun and spooky special train rides during the Halloween season. Other railroads in the area have Halloween trains as well.

Friday, Saturday and Sunday day trains, October 14 - 15 and 20 - 22, 2023. Ride the Pumpkin Patch Trains on the V & T Railroad from Virginia City to Gold Hill and back. The pumpkin patch is fall's ultimate playground, so it's the perfect time to catch a train to the Gold Hill pumpkin patch and pick your special pumpkin. For kids who like a little more of scare, check out our Pumpkin Patch dusk trains on October 14, 20 and 21 at 5 p.m. Day trains depart each day at 11:20 a.m., 1:20 p.m., and 3 p.m. Tickets are $24 for adults, $16 for kids, $8 for toddlers with pumpkin, free for toddlers on parents laps who do not pick a pumpkin. Friday through Tuesday, October 27 - 31, 2023. Come up to Virginia City and ride through the haunted Comstock Lode, if you dare. Catch the V & T's Haunted Halloween Steam Train under the crescent moon. Brilliant LED lighting is an integral part of the Virginia & Truckee steam train Halloween experience. Ride in open aire cars among the ghostly ruins of the Comstock Lode. It's Disney meets the wild west, beautiful and spooky at the same time. Don't miss this eerie, electric, chilly Halloween steam evening. There are three trips each evening. Don't miss out - get tickets online.

Saturday and Sunday, October 14 - 15, 2023. Ride the steam train at the Nevada State Railroad Museum. The event will include a pumpkin patch with pumpkins for sale and more. Wristbands include unlimited steam train rides and museum entry. Costumes are encouraged. Adults 18 and over are $15, kids 12 to 17 are $10, ages 4 to 11 are $5, age 3 and under free. Regular museum admission will also be available. Train rides depart about every 40 minutes from 10 a.m. to 3:15 p.m.

Friday and Saturday, October 27 - 28, 2023. Have some fun riding this unique motor car around the museum grounds. The Virginia & Truckee McKeen Motor Car is currently the only fully-restored and operable McKeen Motor Car in existence. Come to the museum for a ride between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. Tickets are $8 for age 12 and over, $4 for 4 to 11, free for kids 3 and under. To celebrate Nevada Day, museum admission is free on October 27 - 28, 2023.

More Halloween Trains in Nevada and California

Saturday and Sunday, October 21 - 22 and 28 - 29, 2023. The trains will take visitors to a Pumpkin Patch where they can buy their pumpkins. Trains depart hourly from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. each day. On Saturday nights, Super Spooky Night Trains depart hourly between 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. The museum will also be open on Pumpkin Patch Express days. Admission is $10 per car or $5 with 3 cans of food for the EPCAN food bank. The museum is north of Reno in Portola, CA. For more information, call (530) 832-4131.

October 20 - 21 and 27 - 28, 2023. All start at 7 p.m. - The Nevada Northern Railway's Haunted Ghost Train of Old Ely takes passengers on scary trips with ghost stories, zombies, ghosts, ghouls, aliens, and maybe even UFOs. While riding this Halloween train, you'll never know what's around the next bend. Costumes encouraged. Tickets are $45 for adults, $20 for children 4 through 12, $38 for seniors 65+. Kids under 4 ride free but they still need a ticket. You can order tickets online or call (775) 289-2085.

October 14 - 15, 21 - 22, 28 - 29, 2023. Enjoy a delightful not frightful ride behind a diesel locomotive operated by our 'Skeleton Crew,' while our "(g)host with the most" car attendants keep the party going for 45 fun-filled minutes. Before and after your ride, enjoy exclusive access to the Passenger Station complete with fangtastic games, activities, and photo ops for all ages. Come dressed to impress in your Halloween best and bring a bag to collect fun "Track or Treat" goodies. Each weekend has a different theme. Departures are 10 a.m., 11:15 a.m., 1 p.m., 2:15 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. Coach general tickets are $29 for adults, $19 for kids ages 3 to 17.
