The Polar Express™ on the V&T Railroad

November 17 through December 23, 2016. Riding The Polar Express™ to the North Pole has become a popular family outing during the Christmas holiday season in the Reno / Tahoe area. Transportation to visit Santa's legendary workshop is provided on trains of the Virginia and Truckee Railroad, departing on select dates from the Eastgate Depot near Carson City. If you want to do this, get tickets ASAP as this attraction usually sells out. The Polar Express™ for the 2016 Christmas holiday season will visit the North Pole from November 17 through December 23.

Candy Cane Express on the V&T Railroad

November 25, 26 and December 3, 4, 10, 11, 2016. Two departures each day at 12 noon and 2 p.m. The Candy Cane Express departs from the Virginia and Truckee Railroad Depot in Virginia City and travels for 50 minutes over the 140-year old route, including the Candy Cane Tunnel. Sip hot cocoa or hot cider and enjoy cookies and candy canes while singing carols, and listening to the 1832 classic "T'was the Night Before Christmas." Enjoy the mountains, the scenery and the children's excitement. Tickets are $19 for those over 12, $8 for kids ages 2 to 12. Children under 2 are free if sitting on a lap. Get tickets in advance (recommended) or show up at the station and take your chances.

Santa Trains at the Nevada State Railroad Museum

Saturday and Sunday, December 3 - 4, 10 - 11, 17 - 18, 2016. Come ride the festive steam train during the Christmas holiday season at the Nevada State Railroad Museum in Carson City. Santa Trains will run every half hour from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Santa Trains at the Western Pacific Railroad Museum in Portola

Fridays and Saturdays, December 2 - 3, 9 - 10 and 16 - 17, 2016. The museum opens at 4 p.m. and Santa trains will run from 5 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., or until everyone gets a ride. Admission is $10 per carload, or $5 per carload with a donation of at least 3 non-perishable food items for the local food bank. Santa and Mrs. Claus will be there. Passengers can enjoy free coffee, hot chocolate, cider, and cookies. Except for the Santa trains, the museum is closed for the winter. For more information, call (530) 832-4131. The Western Pacific Railroad Museum is located at 700 Western Pacific Way in Portola, CA, about an hour north of Reno.

The Polar Express™ on the Nevada Northern Railway in Ely

November 19, 25, 26, and December 2, 3, 4, 9, 10, 11, 16, 17, 18, 19, 21, 22, 23, 26, 27, 28, 2016. Passengers board these special Polar Express™ excursions on the Nevada Northern Railway at 1100 Avenue A in Ely (on Highway 50 in eastern Nevada). Should you be out that way during the holiday season, families and children can enjoy this festive experience. The Polar Express train ride recreate a trip to the North Pole just like in the movie. Tickets are $39 for adults, $20 for kids ages 4 to 12, and free for children 3 and under. Visit the Polar Express web page for train ride dates, times, and to get tickets online.
