May is Older Americans Month - May, 2023. Older adults are a vital part of our society. Since 1963, communities across the country have shown their gratitude by celebrating Older Americans Month each May. The theme of the 2023 celebration is "Aging Unbound."

Cinco de Mayo Celebration - Friday through Sunday, May 5 - 7, 2023, 12 noon to 8 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, starts 4 p.m. on Friday. Come to the Glow Plaza Festival Grounds in Reno's Neon Line District to enjoy Northern Nevada's largest annual celebration of Hispanic heritage. From amateur boxing to dancing horses, carnival rides and live music, there is fun for the whole family. Admission is $20 for adults. The Glow Plaza is at 670 W. 4th St. in Reno.

May is Nevada Wildfire Awareness Campaign - Every action you take at your home or in your community to reduce the wildfire threat and prepare for the next wildfire can help increase the odds of survival. Check the website for related events and other information about wildfire prevention.

Bike Month - May, 2023. This month long bicycle awareness campaign is put on by the Truckee Meadows Bicycle Alliance and focuses on promoting healthy living and physical fitness through active transportation. Key things this year include commuter challenge, educational and informational presentations, promoting partner events and rides and elevating community organizations and businesses. One Truckee River Month - entire month of May, 2023. Truckee River Month is a month-long celebration every May dedicated to raising public awareness and engagement with our wonderful Truckee River. Check the website for a list of 2023 events.

Sci-On! Science + Fiction Film Festival - May 1 - 6, 2023. Science and science-fiction activities and film screenings will be at the Fleischmann Planetarium on the UNR campus. Tickets are available online. (775) 830-5295.

Grow Your Own, Nevada! - starts May 2, 2023, 6 p.m. Classes are for homeowners and other small scale growers. It concentrates on imparting basic horticultural information and also provides information about new and alternative growing methods. Free classes in 2023 will be offered only online via Zoom. Galena Creek Visitor Center - Summer hours are Tuesday through Sunday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The surrounding Galena Creek Regional Park is open from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Reno Aces Baseball - Tuesday, May 2, 2023, 6:05 p.m. The Reno Aces start May with a six game homestand against the Round Rock Express at Greater Nevada Field. Another six game series against the Sacramento River Cats begins on May 16.

Headlock on Hunger - Saturday, May 6, 2023, 7 p.m. Headlock on Hunger is a campaign and non-profit event that aims to raise awareness, and combat the hunger issue that is affecting the children of the Reno/ Sparks area. All proceeds and food collected during our pro wrestling event and food drive are donated to the Food Bank of Northern Nevada. General admission tickets are $5 and available online. How to preserve the costumes and entertainment: When Hollywood Came to Reno! - Sunday, May 7, 2023, 12 noon. When the world-famous MGM Hello Hollywood, Hello! show opened in 1978, it was billed as The Biggest Show in the World, on The Biggest Stage in the World appearing in The Biggest Little City in the World, Reno, Nevada. Karen Burns was a professional dancer appearing in many shows, most notably: Hello, Hollywood, Hello! Karen had the unpreceded opportunity to purchase "a piece of history" of over 1,250 of the original spectacular costumes from this show. At the Downtown Reno Library, 301 South Center Street.

Carson City Wide Short Film Competition - begins May 10, 2023. Films are due on Wednesday, May 24, 2023 at noon. The screening will take place at the Brewery Arts Center in Carson City on Saturday, June 3 at 7 p.m. Visit the website for more details and entry information. May Arboretum Society Spring Plant Sale - Friday through Sunday, May 12 - 14, 2023. Friday is the member's only preview from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Saturday and Sunday are 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. and 8 a.m. to 12 noon respectively Come stroll Burke and Plaza gardens where there will be over 3,800 plants for sale. All plants will be zoned for our area and most you will not find in local garden shops. You will find a variety of shrubs, flowers, cactus, tomatoes and more. At the Wilbur D. May Arboretum in Rancho San Rafael Regional Park, 1595 N. Sierra St. in Reno.

Hands ON! Second Saturday at the Nevada Museum of Art - Saturday, May 13, 2023. Come to the Nevada Museum of Art for fun for the whole family, including storytelling, art activities, live performances, and all current exhibits. This month, come to celebrate the art of Jean LaMarr. Admission to the Museum is free for all on Second Saturdays.

Student Outreach Clinics from UNR - General and Pediatrics Clinic - Saturday, May 13, 2023, 8 a.m. to 12 noon and Tuesday, May 16, 2023, 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. This clinic provides general medical care, including complete physical exams and nutrition counseling. The Pediatric Clinic provides medical care for pediatric patients from newborns to teenagers. Clinics are by appointment only. This dazzling show will transport you from the twilight of the Russian Empire to the euphoria of Paris in the 1920s, as a brave young woman sets out on a journey to discover the mystery of her past. Programs on the Porch at Bowers Mansion - May 19 to June 23, 2023, 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. This year's theme is 'Wildlife Edition'. Bring a blanket or chair and enjoy this free series where multiple wildlife professionals will be speaking about a variety of species. This series is free, however donations are happily accepted for the speakers. The first presentation is "Birds of Prey" with master falconer Marie Gaspari-Crawford. Hot August Nights Spring Fever Revival - Friday and Saturday, May 19 - 20, 2023. This annual festival will get the engines warmed up and ready for the main event as we Show-n-Shine for two days with classic vehicles, live entertainment, a vendor village featuring art and craft vendors, memorabilia, and a variety of food vendors. Junior Naturalist Program - "Birding 101" - Saturday, May 20, 2023. This month we'll explore at Davis Creek Regional Park. 40th Annual Chili on the Comstock and Craft Beer Tour - Saturday and Sunday, May 20 - 21, 2023. This event has participants sampling chili and craft brews from various merchants and booths spread out in zones around Virginia City, giving visitors the chance to discover more of the historic mining town than ever before. New this year; The Great Fire - Hot Chili Pepper Eating Challenge. Ticket options give attendees the option of sampling from 12 chili booths including professional and local chefs, 12 craft beer samples, or for a better value and even more fun, a combination of the two. Great Basin Scottish Highland Games - Saturday and Sunday, May 20 - 21, 2023, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. This unique event celebrates ancestral tradition by bringing a bit of that same Scottish heritage to the Truckee Meadows area. The Games are also noted for their unique sporting and athletic events, many of which are so well known to have become emblematic of Scotland, such as the bagpipes, the kilt, whisky, and heavy events, especially the caber toss and axe throwing. ZERO Prostate Cancer Run/Walk - Sunday, May 21, 2023, 8 a.m. The Reno Run/Walk is an in-person event with a virtual option. For information about joining in and fundraising to support prostate cancer patients and families, visit the website. The event is at Idlewild Park, 2055 Idlewild Dr. in Reno.

Walks with Washoe County Park Rangers - Tuesday, May 23, 2023, 5 p.m. Washoe County park rangers lead these outings at locations around the county. Walks are at various times and days and are free and open to the public. Pre-registration required. Today's walk will be on the Galena Creek Trail. There will be a maximum of 20 attendees allowed for each hike, and registration opens 30 days in advance. NO PETS.

Idlewild Park Train - Friday, May 26, 2023. The Idlewild Park train begins 2023 operations on the Friday before Memorial Day and continues running on Tuesdays through Sundays until Labor Day. Open Tuesday to Friday 11 a.m. - 3 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday 11 a.m. - 6 p.m. This makes a fun family adventure and the fare is still just $2, with kids 2 and under free on an adult's lap.

Discover Your Parks Series - Sunday, May 28, 2023. Truckee Meadows Parks Foundation is leading Discover Your Parks Series in different parks located in Washoe County. This is a free program of all-ages events. This month features free community yoga at Idlewild Park. Visit the web page for a full list. Attendance is limited and you must register to participate. If you would rather, you can virtually visit several popular parks and trails with guided hike presentations available from "Virtual Guided Hikes" on the TMPF website.

Memorial Day Weekend - Memorial Day is observed on Monday, May 29, 2023, with numerous activities and events around Reno during this first big holiday weekend of the year.

Feed the Camel - opening for the season on May 31, 2023. Come enjoy fun family evenings and get great food at the same time. "Feed the Camel" is on Wednesday evenings at McKinley Arts and Culture Center.
