Happy New Year! - Monday, January 1, 2024.

Come in from the Cold Family Entertainment Series - Saturdays, January 6, 13, 20, 27, 2024. "Come in from the Cold" is held on Saturday evenings in the Western Heritage Interpretive Center at Bartley Ranch Regional Park in Reno. The 2024 series is in January, February, and March. The doors open at 5:30 p.m. with performances starting at 7 p.m. Seating is limited, so arriving early at this popular event is a good idea. A $5 per person donation is requested at the door. The January 6 performance is by the Northern Nevada Bluegrass Association, Monday Night Volunteers.

Hands ON! Second Saturday at the Nevada Museum of Art - Saturday, January 13, 2024. Come to the Nevada Museum of Art for a day of fun for the whole family, including storytelling, art activities, live performances, and all current exhibits. Admission to the Museum is free for all on Second Saturdays. Hours are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Junior Ranger Adventure Day at Bartley Ranch Regional Park - Saturday, January 13, 2024, 2 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. Washoe County Park Rangers are excited to introduce a freshly revised Junior Ranger Activity Guide, full of fun new activities to help your youngsters learn all about your Washoe County Regional Parks. This free event is open to families and children of all ages. Meet on the front steps of the Huffaker Historic Schoolhouse. Sign up to attend. 6000 Bartley Ranch Road in Reno.

Martin Luther King, Jr. Day - Monday, January 15, 2024. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day is an official national holiday observed across the country, with most federal and local government offices closed for the day. There are celebrations and activities to celebrate the day in the Reno area, plus ways you can volunteer as part of the concurrent Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service.

Free Days at National Parks - The first free day in 2024 is Martin Luther King Jr. Day on Monday, January 15. There are several more during 2024. There are many free days on USFS and BLM land as well. Enjoy your public lands and save money while doing it.

Bruka Theatre Biggest Little Theatre & New Works Festival - January 18 - 20, 2024. This event is a series of plays, workshops, open mic night and more. Visit the website for details. Bruka Theatre is at 99 N. Virginia St. in downtown Reno.

Student Outreach Clinics from UNR - Women's Clinic - Saturday, January 20, 2024, 8 a.m. to 12 noon. This clinic provides medical care aimed specifically at female concerns. This includes services such as Pap smears, breast exams, STD counseling, pregnancy tests, IUD placements, and physical exams for both gynecological and non-gynecological concerns. Pregnancy care is not offered. By appointment only. To schedule, call (775) 391-0632 or email studentoutreachclinic@med.unr.edu. Clinics are held at the University Health Building, 745 W. Moana Lane in Reno.

Reno Wine Walk - Saturday, January 20, 2024, 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. The Riverwalk Merchants present this fun event every third Saturday of the month. Visit any of the participating start merchants with $30 and receive your wine glass and hand stamp (with photo ID), then make the rounds sampling wines at numerous businesses in the area. This is a 21+ event. The theme this month is Winter Fest. Pets and strollers are not advised. For more information, call 775-825-WALK(9255).

January Junior Naturalist Program - Saturday, January 20, 2024, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. The Junior Naturalist Program is a free outdoor program for children of all ages to learn about local parks, plants, animals, and the environment. Parent/guardian required. Join us at Pah Rah Park to travel through time and explore "Science Through the Ages." Naturalists will learn about milestones in scientific discovery through fun games and hands-on activities. Sponsored by Truckee Meadows Parks Foundation.

Love Notes Short Film Competition - begins January 24, 2024. Can you craft a captivating romance film in just two weeks? This year, we're breaking the rules - romance films of any genre are welcome. We provide three prompts: a line of dialogue, a sound effect, and a prop. Your film should be between 5 and 9 minutes. Screenings and award ceremony at the Brewery Arts Center in Carson City on February 17, 2024.

Science Distilled: The Story of the Future - Thursday, January 25, 2024, 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Join us for an enlightening look at the power of models and forecasting in keeping the public informed about critical environmental concerns. Gain a deeper understanding of how data-driven models can help us prepare for and respond to the challenges of our changing world, all aimed at improving quality of life for our communities. 21+ event. 2024 Presidential Preference Primary early voting - January 27 - February 2, 2024. Early voting in Washoe County for the 2024 presidential preference primary election is every day from January 27 through February 2, 2024, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Refer to my article for a link to a list of locations and open hours throughout Washoe County.

42nd Annual Robert Burns Celebration - Saturday, January 27, 2024, 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. The celebration includes a whisky tasting courtesy of Breakthru, dinner (including that most Scottish of dishes... haggis), presentation of the Scot of the Year, Highland dancers, and a performance by Sierra Highlanders Pipe Band. This event honors the life and works of the renowned Bard of Scotland, Robert Burns. Prepare yourself for a night like no other as we transport you to the heart of Scottish tradition and culture. Reno-Tahoe Senior Winter Games - January 29 to February 14, 2024. "Age is no barrier" at the Reno-Tahoe Senior Winter Games. The Games feature a series of competitions organized in Olympics fashion, with gold, silver, and bronze medals awarded to the top three finishers in each event. There are both individual and team competitions. Registration is now open for both individuals and teams. The basic fee is $40, plus an additional fee for specific events.
